DevLog #4 - A Sign of Life

Welcome back to Fogworld’s devlog! Long time no see. It’s the start of 2024, the game has been in development for over 2 years now and I wanted to talk a little about where we’re at and what the plan for this year is.

State of the Game

Fogworld is not a game that leans heavily on story, graphics or cinematics. Instead it's driven by deep gameplay systems, exploration and discovery. As such my focus so far has been on implementing these systems and making sure they’re fun to play with and offer enough space for the player to find and exploit the interactions within them. Fogworld has 5 vs 5 turn-based combat, a map-building system where players build the world with tiles and buildings and all the progression systems you could want from a monster collecting rpg, each with their own twist to keep things interesting.

Content-wise the game already has the first of four planned story chapters (although I’m currently in the process of rewriting it a little bit). For this story chapter I have created 11 different tiles and buildings, 27 different familiars the player can fight and summon and 38 consumable or equipable items.

All in all, there are currently 1,5 - 3 hours of content, depending on your mastery of the game and a lot of different ways to build your team and your game world.

Plan for 2024

With the gameplay systems and a solid chunk of the game ready, the big goal for 2024 is getting Fogworld into the hands of players. That’s why I’m going to release a free demo for Fogworld later this year. Probably around Q4, but I can’t say exactly when.

So if the gameplay systems are ready and there is like 3 hours of content, why not release the demo right now? Honestly, the game isn’t nearly as polished as I’d like it to be. So a release date later in the year will allow me to replace all those placeholder images, add sound effects and music, and animate the missing skill VFX.

If you want to see these things while I work on them, don’t forget to follow Fogworld on Twitter.

If you have feedback or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Until next time, have a great day!
